Tinc VPN Introduction

This section shows the details how to make Tinc VPN deployable on global scale and enable non-technical person easily using it.

Tinc VPN is a popular and mature VPN application developed since 1990s. It is widely used by engineers to create virtual tunnels between nodes. The tinc configuration requires sophisiticated networking knowledge.

As quoted from tinc web site:

Tinc is a Virtual Private Network (VPN) daemon that uses tunnelling and encryption to create a secure private network between hosts on the Internet. tinc is Free Software and licensed under the GNU General Public License version 2 or later. Because the VPN appears to the IP level network code as a normal network device, there is no need to adapt any existing software. This allows VPN sites to share information with each other over the Internet without exposing any information to others. In addition, tinc has the following features:

  • Encryption, authentication and compression
  • Automatic full mesh routing
  • NAT traversal
  • Easily expand your VPN
  • Ability to bridge ethernet segments
  • Runs on many operating systems and supports IPv6
